Invitation to Special QuSoft Seminar on impact of LLMs on research
Dear QuSofters and friends,
We want to invite you to an ad-hoc mini-conference on the impact of LLMs on (the core of) our job. In these strange times of AI, more and more we feel the urgent need to come together and discuss a broad series of topics. Instead of our regular QuSoft Seminar, we have invited more speakers and more guests. We hope that you will join us to discuss: “The industrialization of theoretical sciences – the impact of frontier LLMs on frontier theoretical research”.
Guest speakers are from theoretical sciences. The main target audience is scientists from mathematics, cryptography, optimization, and quantum theory, as well as senior leadership from CWI, UvA, NWO, SURF.
Time, place and format
Friday 4 September 10.00-15.00 at Amsterdam Science Park, in room L016 at CWI. We will hold a break between 12.00–13.30h (bring your own lunch or buy it at the various nearby canteens on campus). The interaction with the audience is as important as the content of the talk.
UPDATE Due to the large amounts of registrants, we will host the seminar at the Turing Room next to the CWI.

Central questions
- How to use frontier LLMs to do mathematical research?
- Can we continue to do frontier (theoretical) research without access to frontier AI models?
- How does the work of a master or PhD student change? How do we—academics—adjust?
- How do we adjust our academic budgets according to this new reality? Many young researchers pay for LLM access out of their own, private wallet.
- What is a publishable amount of academic work? We might have to re-adjust our feeling of how much fits in one academic paper. How does this change the peer review process and conferences?
- What does it mean that our data and budgets flow through a few US companies? Can we avoid that?
